Roger Kabler, professional actor, comedian, and impressionist, will bring his movie to Beverly’s Cabot Theatre on Saturday, February 18th at 7:30 pm. As a teenager, Kabler was inspired and delighted by Robin Williams for many years and, like millions of others, he was devastated by Robin’s passing. However, Kabler was haunted by images of Robin that kept flashing in his mind and he even felt possessed by him at times. He was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and was told that he was suffering from delusions, but Robin didn’t go away. Kabler felt Robin pulling at him, urging him to help him, saying “I need to get back to work”. In response, Kabler created a stage show as a tribute to Robin, to ensure that he would be remembered for his spectacular wit, genius, and humanity. The show toured America for several years and thousands of people saw it, many of whom said they felt Robin’s presence during the show.
Kabler then decided to tell his story in a film using footage from live shows and reenacting events around it. He called it “Being Robin” and raised money to hire a crew to shoot it. However, due to the Covid pandemic, they were unable to finish the film. Kabler then decided to wrap the footage they had with narration to fill in the gaps and spent two years editing it. “Being Robin” has elements of a documentary, with re-enactments of events, and a bit of fantasy, and Kabler coined its style “Genre Fluid”. The film features Alainna Rodgers in her film debut and a cameo by actor/comedian Bill Kirchenbauer.
Many people who have seen “Being Robin” have been very impacted by its rawness and sense of deep love and devotion for Robin Williams. Kabler hopes that the film will help bring people together and raise awareness about the struggles of Bipolar disorder. He also hopes that it will give the audience a chance to see what Robin might have done if given a chance to come back for a little while. Ultimately, “Being Robin” is Kabler’s love letter to Robin Williams, and he hopes that it will help keep his memory alive.
The Cabot Theatre, where Kabler’s show will be held, is a North Shore treasure and a legacy of the visionary showmanship and architectural passion of the Ware Brothers. It opened on December 8, 1920, as a dream palace for vaudeville and silent movies and it was hailed as “the most impressive auditorium of its size east of New York.” Over the first 15 months of operations, community engagement with the Cabot was truly phenomenal as expressed in donations, volunteer hours, and attendance at live music events and film screenings.
